Yarn lead time is a stack of stages, not a single factory promise. Buyers who only ask “how many days for production?” miss sampling, lab dips, packaging print, booking, and ocean transit—then wonder why the warehouse date slipped. Plan the full path from brief to door, then negotiate the controllable middle.

This calendar is for wholesale / OEM knitting and crochet programs from China. Pair with MOQ explained and sample process. Program inquiry: bulk yarn supplier.

Lead Time Stack (What Actually Adds Days)

Stage Indicative range Notes
Supplier shortlist & brief 3–10 days Your side + responses
Stock samples 3–10 days + courier Faster if styles exist
Custom / OEM development sample 1–3 weeks New count or blend
Lab dips (custom color) 1–3 weeks including revisions See lab dip guide
Bulk production (dye + wind + pack) Often 3–6 weeks after approvals Volume and color count matter
Private-label print / materials +few days to +2 weeks Artwork must be final
Inland + export docs + vessel 1–2 weeks typical Port congestion varies
Ocean transit ~2–5+ weeks by lane Plus destination clearance

First bulk programs commonly land around 6–10 weeks from serious supplier selection to warehouse—longer if colors iterate or peak season hits.

Example Production Calendar (First Custom Order)

Assume: existing acrylic style, 4 custom colors, retail ball pack, FOB Shanghai.

Week Milestone
0 Brief + style confirmation
1 Stock hand-feel sample approved
2–3 Lab dips submitted / revised / approved
3 PO issued; deposit / terms cleared; artwork locked
4–7 Bulk dye, winding, balling, packing
7–8 QC, docs, cargo to port, vessel load
9–12 Ocean + clearance + inbound (lane-dependent)

Running stock colors can collapse weeks 2–3 and shorten bulk—often the right path for a first sellable test.

What Moves Lead Time Up or Down

Usually longer

  • Many custom colors with revisions
  • New fiber / fancy construction (e.g. chenille)
  • Certification-segregated lots (GRS checks)
  • Complex private-label packaging
  • Peak Chinese holiday shutdowns (plan around Chinese New Year)
  • Late PO changes after dyeing starts

Usually shorter

  • Running shade-card colors
  • Standard ball/cone already in the mill lineup
  • Fewer colors, higher kilos each
  • Artwork and approvals ready before PO
  • Repeat order on an unchanged style/color

Buyer Planning Rules

  1. Work backward from in-stock date — subtract ocean + clearance + production + approval buffers
  2. Separate “production days” from “project days” in every quote conversation
  3. Freeze color and pack before asking for a hard ex-factory date
  4. Add buffer before major retail or Amazon inbound appointments
  5. Ask for lead time by quantity band (e.g. 500 kg vs 3 MT)

Peak Season & Holiday Notes

Period Planning tip
Pre–Chinese New Year Book capacity early; expect rush then shutdown
CNY shutdown Little or no production; courier delays
Post-CNY restart Queues for dye houses and packing
Mid-year / Q4 retail peaks Capacity tight on popular acrylics and chenille

Ask your supplier for a written capacity note when your PO sits near holidays—not a verbal “should be fine.”

What to Put on the PO for Timing

  • Approved style + color codes (dip IDs if custom)
  • Target ex-factory date and Incoterm
  • Consequences / communication path if delayed
  • Split shipment rules (if allowed)
  • QC hold points before cargo release

Ambiguous “ASAP” POs create disputes; dated milestones create accountability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my quote “25 days” but the project takes two months?

“25 days” often means bulk production after approvals. Sampling, dips, artwork, and freight sit outside that number.

Can I shorten lead time by paying more?

Sometimes for capacity priority—not always for dye chemistry or ocean schedules. Ask what is actually compressible.

Do stock colors always ship faster?

Usually yes for production, if inventory or running dye plans exist. Still confirm real availability for your kilo volume.

How should I inquire with dates attached?

Send target warehouse or ex-factory date, color count, and kilos via Get Free Quote, and review bulk yarn program expectations.

Summary

Plan yarn lead time as a calendar of gates: brief → sample → color → PO → bulk → ship → clear. Negotiate the production block honestly, but protect the approval and freight buffers that determine when goods are actually sellable.

Next steps: Pick an in-warehouse date, build the backward calendar, and request a dated production plan with your style and color list.
