Acrylic–cotton mix yarn (blend of acrylic and cotton) can shrink, but usually only slightly—and only if washed or dried improperly. Acrylic is resistant to shrinkage; cotton can contract with heat and agitation. In a blend (e.g. 50% acrylic, 50% cotton), the result is much less shrinkage than with wool, and no felting. With cool water and low or no heat drying, shrinkage is minimal.

This guide covers why acrylic–cotton can shrink, how to prevent it, and what to do if something has already shrunk.

How Acrylic and Cotton Behave

Fibre Shrinkage Notes
Acrylic Resistant Does not felt; can be damaged or distorted by high heat (e.g. dryer)
Cotton Can shrink Hot water and high heat drying cause contraction; can stretch when wet then recover when dried flat
Blend Usually minimal Cotton may shrink a little; acrylic holds size—net effect is slight if care is gentle

Does Acrylic–Cotton Mix Yarn Shrink?

Yes, but only a little—and only if you use high heat or harsh washing.

  • Hot water and high dryer heat can make cotton in the blend contract.
  • Heavy agitation (e.g. strong spin, rough cycle) can distort fibres and cause slight shrinkage.
  • With cool/lukewarm wash and flat or low-heat dry, the blend is relatively shrink-resistant and easier to care for than wool.

Takeaway: Unlike wool, it won’t felt or shrink dramatically—but improper washing can still affect fit.

How to Prevent Shrinkage

  • Wash in cool or lukewarm water—hot water is the main cause of cotton shrinkage.
  • Hand wash or use the delicate cycle.
  • Dry flat when possible to avoid stretching or heat damage; if using a dryer, use low heat or tumble dry cool.
  • Avoid harsh detergents and bleach—they can weaken cotton and change behaviour.
  • Store knits folded, not hung, to avoid stretching; keep dry (cotton holds moisture).

What If Your Acrylic–Cotton Project Shrank?

  • Soak in lukewarm water with a little hair conditioner to relax fibres, then gently stretch back to shape while damp; dry flat.
  • Steam blocking: Use a garment steamer to warm the fabric, then re-pin or reshape and let dry.
  • If it’s too small to recover, consider repurposing (e.g. pouch, pillow cover, stuffed toy).

Acrylic–Cotton: Best Uses and Care Summary

Good for: Sweaters, cardigans, baby clothes, blankets, market bags?soft* and low-maintenance when cared for correctly.

Care summary:

  • Cool water wash
  • Low or no heat drying (flat dry preferred)
  • Mild detergent; no bleach

Final Thoughts

Acrylic–cotton mix yarn can shrink a little if washed in hot water or dried on high heat; with cool wash and flat or low-heat dry, shrinkage is minimal. It is more shrink-resistant and easier to care for than wool—ideal for soft, easy-care knits when you follow the care tips above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acrylic cotton yarn shrink in the dryer?

It can shrink slightly if dried on high heat (cotton contracts). Use low heat or tumble dry cool, or dry flat to avoid shrinkage.

Can you wash acrylic cotton yarn projects in the machine?

Yes, on a gentle/delicate cycle with cool water. Avoid hot water and heavy spin to minimise shrinkage and distortion.

Is acrylic cotton blend good for baby clothes?

Yes. It is soft, breathable (from cotton), and easy-care if washed in cool water and dried flat or on low heat.
